Horse General Information

The horse (Equus Caballus) is one of ten modern species of the genus Equus and has long been one of the most important of all domesticated animals to mankind.  The horse has long been used in farming, warfare, religion, art, mythology, recreation, and transportation in addition to more specialized uses such as hippotherapy and equine assisted psychotherapy.  It is seen in many different sizes, shapes, and colors depending largely upon the horse breed.

Almost all horses in theory can carry a human on their back or at least be harnessed to pull an object of some sort, but specific horse breeds have been developed over hundred or even thousands of years for different tasks.  Lighter horses such as Arabians and Quarter Horses were developed mostly for racing or riding whereas larger horses such as Clydesdales or Percherons with heavier and stronger bodies were developed for plowing and pulling.  In more industrialized nations with the invention of tractors and automobiles the use of the horse has declined for everyday farming and transportation to more recreational purposes like trail riding, showing, and racing.
